First off, for everybody that has been reading these posts from start to finish I do commend you, and I hope I haven’t had to many grammatical errors along the way. Now, this blog started on Sunday, June 20th. Since then I have had around 400 hits, which is much more than the 40 I expected. However, some of you may have noticed that my blog posts are quite long. Well, for those of you who enjoy reading those long posts I am sorry to tell you that they are coming to an end. The reason why I have had so much to say the past week was because of the packed week that I have had. First was my RedRover internship, then came the 2010 NASC conference. So for the past 2 weeks, I have done a lot, and I have done a lot worth blogging. So now I am on my way to the French Woods Festival of Preforming Arts. It is an awesome camp. I will be up there from now until around september 3rd. I may come home earlier, I may come home later. For my friends who are reading this, I will probably be out of cell service for that period, so don’t text me as you will not get a response. But I won’t be doing things like going on conference calls or going to international speedways every day, so there just won’t be that much to blog about. It has been the best first 2 weeks of summer ever. And I cannot wait for camp. see you all soon…
My last day at RedRover was awesome. I went from listening to sales calls to making one. I learned more than just about the company, I learned about myself. I learned that in business, sometimes the best way to connect with a customer is not by talking, but by taking a step back and listening. This internship has a perfect track. Day 1 I learned about the company, Day 2 I saw how that information was used to interact with the customer, and Day 3 I got to interact with the customer. So my 3 day internship at RedRover is over, but that doesn’t mean I am leaving the company. I not only plan on staying in touch, but I plan on continuing to work on projects with them and I plan on doing another internship with them as soon as I have the time.
First and foremost, I had my first real conference call today, which I kinda thought was awesome. Seriously though, I really got into it today. I went from learning the material to starting to execute what I had learned. Tomorrow I will moderate my first chat as part of the SGA blog. I didn’t know what it at first was so I guess it’s worth sharing. the way that the chat works is when you want to contribute to the chat, you tweet what you want to say and tag the tweet with #sgachat. Then, everyone partaking in the SGA chat can see your post as it relates to the current conversation. And so tomorrow I will be the moderator for that chat, and I can’t wait. In addition, I found some other ways that RedRover can integrate with Horace Greeley High School. Right now, RedRover is in 15 colleges and a cooperation. But their idea and their software could easily go further than that. For those of you that don’t know, RedRover reinvents the college directory so instead of only being able to search by name, you can search by dorm, activities, and even hobbies. Unfortunately, you can’t sort by gender because if you could it would be a great dating service
. Anyway, Its the only of its kind that I have ever seen, and it needs to be everywhere. But in my opinion it needs more public relations. I personally think that the more people that hear about it, the more people will want it. But i’m their intern, so obviously my view may be a little off base. But nonetheless, RedRover needs to expand. So I am going to try to bring them to Greeley. We are in a high school that comes from two middle schools. So when you get to greeley, you know maybe 12% of the people there. So even though it is a high school an not a college, for a place with 1300 people, Greeley would really benefit from a system like it. And for RedRover, it gives them a huge PR jump. For now RedRover is only reaching the colleges they go to. But if they go to high schools, then this program will have the opportunity to go to all of the colleges that those kids go to. It’s just a matter of getting kids to talk about it, and it will come to life. So tomorrow is my last day. It kind of stinks. But it has been a great run and I cannot wait for tomorrow.
So today was my first full day at RedRover, and boy, what a day. I got in at 8am. I started out with a one on one meeting with Tom where he first showed me the full background of RedRover and Swiftkick, how they started, and where they were headed. Then we went into action. I was working on multiple things all day, to the point where I had 24 tabs open on safari and was constantly using keyboard shortcuts to switch between them. It wasn’t until 6:11pm where everything started to come together. The daily projects finished, and I had finished up the SGA poll. All in all it was a very long day, but I absolutely cannot wait for tomorrow. And for the 30 of you who have clicked on my blog so far, I thank you for reading.
Before you start reading this I think you should know that I’ve kind of been writing these posts with the assumption that people will have been reading the previous posts, So you might want to read the earlier posts to get a better idea of this one. Just a thought.
So back to the main idea. I am currently interning for this guy named Tom. if you have read the previous posts, you know who Tom is. If you haven’t, Tom is the guy who inspired me to start this blog and who is currently my boss. Well Tom runs this company called Red Rover. Red Rover takes what we think of the college directory and revamps it. Revamps it so you can’t just search by name. You can search by class, dorm, activities, and even hobbies. So I am interning at this company, and Tom wants to know why I want to be his intern. So instead of shooting him an email, I figured I will do what his business is all about, use modern technology to send a message.
Why I want to be at Red Rover
No joke, Red Rover stands for everything that I want to do when I grow up. It involves almost everything I love and almost everything that I want to be in my life. The first is technology. The second is business. The last is public relations. I love to be out there and I love to interact with other people. So the reason I want to be at this company is because it is an opportunity to both involve things I love and make some cash at the some time. For the record I am not making any money in this internship and don’t expect to, but i’m just speculating for the future. So thats why I want this internship and thats why I love this internship. Tom also asked me what I want to do while I am at this company. It has to do with the same reason I love this internship. I want to do everything that is part of this company. I want to use technology. I want to interact with business. I want to be interacting with the customer. Since I have started I have only worked with technology. But its not over, and I can’t wait to keep going tomorrow morning.
For the record, the one thing I love that is not in this company is music. but after this internship I go to camp where I am going to play trumpet for 6 hours a day every day for 10 weeks. And I can’t wait for that either
